Background

David was born and raised in San Leandro and is a graduate of San Leandro High School. David received his bachelor’s degree in Accounting and then his Masters Degree in Finance in 1998 from California State University East Bay. After getting his MBA, David worked 11 years in corporate finance before stepping into the family business in 2007, Grodin Financial & Insurance Services, and working on the personal finances of individuals and small businesses. David has owned several small businesses in the past. That experience gives him an unbeatable combination of real-world experience and the more disciplined learning of a Masters program.

David holds his life insurance license, FINRA Series 66 and Series 7 registrations. He also holds the industry designations of Certified Family Business Specialist (CFBS) and Certified Long Term Care Specialist (CLTC).

Experience

David has built a client base of over 250 clients since 2007 by focusing on building relationships with his clients. David believes in relationships that will last many years as he feels that the only way to truly build wealth is by adopting the right attitude and mindset and that takes time.

David is passionate about being available to his clients. His motto has always been that if he is in the office and not in a meeting with a client, he is available to talk to them. He follows up with his clients when questions arise, often very quickly.

David prides himself on being able to answer most questions about financial matters even if that is an area that he cannot help a client with. Of course, he frequently refers his clients to others that handle the matters that he does not, like taxes and trusts.

David works with individuals to create a real retirement plan that can lead up to as many as 11 streams of income at retirement. He creates the plan by making sure his clients maximize their protection, save the right amount of money in the right places and then grow their money in a strategic but moderate way. David works with businesses in the areas of deferred compensation, executive bonus plans and building wealth outside of the business as well as tax reduction strategies. David also brings his specialty of working with family owned or closely held businesses in the areas of buy/sell agreement planning and succession planning (passing the business to the next generation while minimizing estate taxes).

David is an active member of the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce and sits on the board as the past Chair of the Board. He was Chairman of the Board for 2013 and 2014. David is also part of NAIFA (National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors). He is a member of the Agents Association with MassMutal Financial Group. He is a founding member of the Best of the Bay Business Networking International Group, located in Oakland, CA. He is a lifetime member of the National Eagle Scout  Association. He was a Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 503 in San Leandro for eleven years and was privileged to help fifteen scouts earn their rank of Eagle Scout.

Personal

On the personal side, David lives with his wife of over 15 years, Tricia and their two dogs: a Cardigan Corgie, Chester and a Labradoodle, Belle. David keeps active with daily dog walks and frequent visits to the gym. He also has a wine collection and enjoys seeking out small wineries and sharing his finds with friends. David enjoys cooking and entertaining friends.

David attributes his success in the financial services business to Mary Grodin, his mother. She asked and asked for him to get into the family business and she had the perfect setup ready to go. MEET MARY GRODIN

Background

Mary was born in Chicago but moved to Los Angeles with her family at the age of ten. She came to the Bay Area to attend UC Berkeley where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. Before starting her financial planning business she worked as a Food Service Consultant for 13 years with an institutional food service company providing food and equipment to restaurants and hospitals. Mary holds her insurance license, FINRA Series 66 and Series 7 registrations. She also holds the industry designations of Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), Certified Funds Specialist (CFS), Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF), Certified Long-Term Care (CLTC), and Chartered Special Needs Consultant (ChSNC).

Experience

Mary has been in business since 1986. She points out that investments and financial planning are not just about numbers. She understands that her clients are best served by solid financial advice and constant communication. She makes it a priority to be available to answer her clients’ questions. By being client service focused, Mary has built a solid client base of individuals, families, professionals and successful business owners.

Mary’s belief in the principles of hard work and planning, plus a desire to help her clients prepare for their financial needs now and in the future, is a constant with her. “Helping Build and Protect Wealth” is the motto that she lives by. Mary takes a holistic approach to financial planning that incorporates building and protecting wealth as well as coordinating all of a person’s assets. Her practice focuses on pre-retirees following them well into retirement. She helps her clients answer the question, “Can I afford to retire”. Three areas of a person’s financial life are looked at; protection, savings and growth. Mary feels that these areas should be integrated and coordinated to aid in a successful retirement.

Community Service

One way Mary serves her community is as an educator. She teaches financial planning classes, along with her son David, at the College of Alameda and Mills College. She also conducts financial planning workshops at businesses throughout the bay area.

Mary writes a bi-weekly column for The San Leandro Times called “Ask Mary” where she answers reader’s questions on various financial topics.

Mary is an active participant in her Kiwanis Club, The San Leandro Chamber of Commerce and many other civic and professional organizations.

Personal

On the personal side, Mary has been married to her husband Steve since 1962 and has two sons, Howard and David. David’s decision to join Mary at Grodin Financial & Insurance Services makes Mary very happy as it means her business legacy will live on. But ask Mary if she has any plans to retire soon and she will tell you that she is doing what she loves and feels incredibly lucky to be making a positive difference in her client’s lives.

Mary and her husband are Corvette enthusiasts and have been active members of a Corvette club for over 30 years. Touring with other Corvette owners is an enjoyable way to see new places.

MEET MATTHEW DENNIS

Matthew was born in Fremont and raised in Union City and now lives in Hayward. You could say he is a very local guy. Matthew received his bachelor’s degree in Accounting with a minor in Economics from California State University East Bay in 2007. Matthew earned his CPA designation in 2013. Matthew worked for local CPA firms as well as an independent accounting contractor before joining Grodin Financial & Insurance Services in 2014.

Matthew holds his insurance license. He also holds the industry designation of Certified Long Term Care Specialist (CLTC).

Experience

Matthew started his career working at a local hospital handling all kinds of interesting situations. He decided to go back to school to advance his career and ended up choosing to go into the Accounting field. After several years in that field, he developed a burning desire to help people retire properly. As a CPA he often saw bad advice being given to this clients on the financial side. Matthew decided he could do a great job of helping people understand the tax implications (from a macro perspective) and help them craft strategies for their retirement. While he is new to the Financial Advising side of the business, his experience in taxation gives him instant credibility due to his vast knowledge of how money works.

Matthew is passionate about being available to his clients. When Matthew is in the office, he is often talking to his clients on the phone or via email.

Eric was born and raised in San Carlos and graduated from Carlmont High School. He received his bachelor’s degree in Financial Mathematics and Statistics from University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2008, Eric joined the financial services industry and began building his practice here in the Bay Area.

Experience

Eric launched his financial services career in the employer-sponsored retirement plan market assisting public schools, hospitals, non-profits and municipalities/governmental entities. Eric was introduced to the public school market by his sister, an elementary school teacher in Foster City, and began focusing on retirement planning in the education sector. In less than 5 years, Eric helped over 300 teachers throughout the Bay Area design, customize, and implement retirement plans to supplement their state provided pensions.

Sophia was born and raised in Fremont, California. She received her high school diploma from Mission San Jose High School, and completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of California, Davis.

Experience

Throughout her college career, Sophia actively pursued relevant coursework and internships to broaden her analytical skills set and enhance her understanding of the industry. As a wealth management intern at Merrill Lynch, she was able to gain exposure to the industry by researching financial trends and presenting marketing reports to financial advisors and senior management. Through these experiences, Sophia was able to hone her communication and analytical skills, and enhance her business knowledge. Sophia started in the San Francisco office in 2013 as a junior advisor. Sophia joined the team at Grodin Financial & Insurance Services in 2015 to work specifically on a book of business that was acquired from another financial advisor. She has proven her dedication and primarily works with David Grodin, the senior partner at the firm and assists him with multiple clients. At UC Davis, Sophia balanced completing the rigorous course load of a Managerial Economics major with being an active leader on campus. Christian was born in Berkeley, but was raised in Southern California. He received his high school diploma from Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, and completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Idaho in Moscow, ID. Christian pursued his degree in Finance and Accounting while playing Division 1 Collegiate football for his Alma Mater. While playing collegiate football, Christian gained the work ethic, leadership, focus and drive that has propelled his career ever since. He graduated from a competitive Business Program that required understanding in all areas of business: Marketing, Information Systems, Management, Operations and an emphasis on Finance. As a Financial Planning intern at Northwestern Mutual, he was able to gain  hands-on experience by working with Senior Advisors to create plans and market portfolios. Through these experiences, Christian was able to hone his analytical and management skills, and enhance his business knowledge. Christian started in the Fremont office for Mass Mutual in 2015 as a Junior Advisor.
