Background

David was born and raised in San Leandro and is a graduate of San Leandro High School. David received his bachelor’s degree in Accounting and then his Masters Degree in Finance in 1998 from California State University East Bay. After getting his MBA, David worked 11 years in corporate finance before stepping into the family business in 2007, Grodin Financial & Insurance Services, and working on the personal finances of individuals and small businesses. David has owned several small businesses in the past. That experience gives him an unbeatable combination of real-world experience and the more disciplined learning of a Masters program.

David holds his life insurance license, FINRA Series 66 and Series 7 registrations. He also holds the industry designations of Certified Family Business Specialist (CFBS) and Certified Long Term Care Specialist (CLTC).

David recently obtained the RICP designation – (Retirement Income Certified Professional).  This designation makes him an expert in retirement income planning.

 

Experience

David is passionate about being available to his clients. His motto has always been that if he is in the office and not in a meeting with a client, he is available to talk to them. He follows up with his clients when questions arise, often very quickly.

David prides himself on being able to answer most questions about financial matters even if that is an area that he cannot help a client with. Of course, he frequently refers his clients to others that handle the matters that he does not, like taxes and trusts.

Education is vitally important in this business and that is why David takes advantage of many different educational programs each year and reads business publications constantly so he can be a resource to his clients.

David works with individuals to create a real retirement plan that can lead up to as many as 11 streams of income at retirement. He creates the plan by making sure his clients maximize their protection, save the right amount of money in the right places and then grow their money in a strategic but moderate way.  David is an expert in retirement income planning and has helped 100’s of clients move from the accumulation phase (working) to the distribution phase (retirement).  He understands all of the distribution strategies and applies the right one for each client.  David works with businesses in the areas of deferred compensation, executive bonus plans and building wealth outside of the business as well as tax reduction strategies. David also brings his specialty of working with family owned or closely held businesses in the areas of buy/sell agreement planning and succession planning (passing the business to the next generation while minimizing estate taxes).

Affiliations

David is an active member of the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce and sits on the board as the past Chair of the Board. He was Chairman of the Board for 2013 and 2014. David is also part of NAIFA (National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors). He is a member of the Agents Association with MassMutal Financial Group. He is a founding member of the Best of the Bay Business Networking International Group, located in Oakland, CA. He is a lifetime member of the National Eagle Scout  Association.

Personal

On the personal side, David lives in San Leandro with his two dogs a Corgie, Chester and Labradoodle, Belle.   He was widowed in 2017 when his wife of 17 years passed away after a long battle with cancer.  David keeps active with frequent dog walks and working out with a personal trainer.  He is super proud of his wine cellar and enjoys wine tasting to keep it stocked.  He has an outdoor wood fired pizza oven, where he is passionate about creating the best pizza.   He enjoys seeking out small wineries and sharing his finds with friends. David enjoys cooking and entertaining friends.

David attributes his success in the financial services business to Mary Grodin, his mother. She asked and asked for him to get into the family business and she had the perfect setup ready to go. Her knowledge was key in teaching David what he needed to know about the business.

MEET MARY GRODIN

Background

Mary was born in Chicago but moved to Los Angeles with her family at the age of ten. She came to the Bay Area to attend UC Berkeley where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. Before starting her financial planning business she worked as a Food Service Consultant for 13 years with an institutional food service company providing food and equipment to restaurants and hospitals. Mary holds her insurance license, FINRA Series 66 and Series 7 registrations. She also holds the industry designations of Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), Certified Funds Specialist (CFS), Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF), Certified Long-Term Care (CLTC), and Chartered Special Needs Consultant (ChSNC).

Experience

Mary has been in business since 1986. She points out that investments and financial planning are not just about numbers. She understands that her clients are best served by solid financial advice and constant communication. She makes it a priority to be available to answer her clients’ questions. By being client service focused, Mary has built a solid client base of individuals, families, professionals and successful business owners.

Community Service

One way Mary serves her community is as an educator. She teaches financial planning classes, along with her son David, at the College of Alameda and Mills College. She also conducts financial planning workshops at businesses throughout the bay area.

Mary writes a bi-weekly column for The San Leandro Times called “Ask Mary” where she answers reader’s questions on various financial topics.

Mary is an active participant in her Kiwanis Club, The San Leandro Chamber of Commerce and many other civic and professional organizations.

Personal

On the personal side, Mary has been married to her husband Steve since 1962 and has two sons, Howard and David. David’s decision to join Mary at Grodin Financial & Insurance Services makes Mary very happy as it means her business legacy will live on. But ask Mary if she has any plans to retire soon and she will tell you that she is doing what she loves and feels incredibly lucky to be making a positive difference in her client’s lives.

Mary and her husband are Corvette enthusiasts and have been active members of a Corvette club for over 30 years. Touring with other Corvette owners is an enjoyable way to see new places.

MEET MATTHEW DENNIS

Matthew was born in Fremont and raised in Union City and now lives in Hayward. You could say he is a very local guy. Matthew received his bachelor’s degree in Accounting with a minor in Economics from California State University East Bay in 2007. Matthew earned his CPA designation in 2013. Matthew worked for local CPA firms as well as an independent accounting contractor before joining Grodin Financial & Insurance Services in 2014.

Matthew holds his insurance license. He also holds the industry designation of Certified Long Term Care Specialist (CLTC).

Experience

Matthew started his career working at a local hospital handling all kinds of interesting situations. He decided to go back to school to advance his career and ended up choosing to go into the Accounting field. After several years in that field, he developed a burning desire to help people retire properly. As a CPA he often saw bad advice being given to this clients on the financial side. Matthew decided he could do a great job of helping people understand the tax implications (from a macro perspective) and help them craft strategies for their retirement.    His experience in taxation and small business consulting, gives him a unique insight into the issues faced by small business owners and entrepreneurs.

Matthew is passionate about being available to his clients. When Matthew is in the office, he is often talking to his clients on the phone or via email.

Eric was born and raised in San Carlos and graduated from Carlmont High School. He received his bachelor’s degree in Financial Mathematics and Statistics from University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2008, Eric joined the financial services industry and began building his practice here in the Bay Area.

Eric launched his financial services career in the employer-sponsored retirement plan market assisting public schools, hospitals, non-profits and municipalities/governmental entities. Eric was introduced to the public school market by his sister, an elementary school teacher in Foster City, and began focusing on retirement planning in the education sector. In less than 5 years, Eric helped over 300 teachers throughout the Bay Area design, customize, and implement retirement plans to supplement their state provided pensions.

Greg Van Ess has been a Bay Area resident for much of his life since graduating from Clarkson University in 1979. Greg’s career has included international executive positions based in Asia with a Fortune 50 company, small business acquisition and ownership, formulation of a non-profit, and the successful turn-around of a high-tech company.  He has experienced financial loss, financial gain, family trauma, and the challenges of an Alzheimer’s care-giver.

MEET BOBBIE ZERBY

Bobbie was born and raised in the Bay Area.  He lived in San Lorenzo, where he received his high school diploma from Arroyo High School.  He then attended San Jose State University and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Accounting and Economics.

Experience

Throughout college, Bobbie actively pursued entrepreneurial experiences; taking on various leadership roles in organizations on campus, as well as consulting for small busineses around the Bay Area.  In the early stages of his career, Bobbie worked in the accounting industry.  He was a Senior Auditor at a CPA firm, auditing local businesses and Non-for-Profit organizations.  He then worked as a Senior Financial Accountant for a start up in San Francisco.  Bobbie launched his financial service career at the Walnut Creek division of Mass Mutual and is now working closely with David Grodin and the GFS team out of San Leandro.

Affiliations

Bobbie currently serves as an ambassador for The Walnut Creek Chamber of Commerce.  Additionally, he serves on the leadership team of a networking group he helped form.  He uses this networking group as a way of leveraging the top professionals around the area to refer to his clients.  Bobbie also sits on the Alumni Board of the San Jose State Chapter of Delta Sigma Phi.  During his college years he helped found the fraternity and it is now his hope to be able to provide guidance to the current members and hopefully help guide them towards success.

Personal

Bobbie, along with his wife Alanna, live in Concord whre they are outnumbered in their household by their two dogs and two cats! Bobbie and his wife spend their free time hiking, wine tasting and enjoying the company of their friends and family.  During the colder times of the year, Bobbie plays Rugby as part of the Olde Gaels Rugby Club based out of Orinda.
